Chapter Six

Anthony stepped off the boat and onto the dock that led to his room. After a morning canoe around the small inlet where the resort rested, he was feeling extra invigorated. He’d been served a high-nutrient breakfast with some sort of a shake that tasted like fruit-flavored ice cream. After four days of meals just the same, he was beginning to gain some weight and more importantly was feeling much stronger than he had in months.

Whatever they were doing down here, he had a feeling it was working. Maybe it was wishful thinking on his part, or maybe it was the clear waters, pollution-free air, and all the sunlight. Whatever it was, though, he was feeling good. Not just okay, not just like he was going to survive another day, but really good. It was the kind of sensation that he hadn’t felt since his younger days going through the academy.

On his morning canoe trip, he decided he wasn’t going to over think it and just go with whatever happened. His doctor had told him that cancer patients were showing over a ninety percent survival rate after visiting this little wonder of the world. He wasn’t about ready to look a gift horse in the mouth and look for a reason why he would fall into the other ten percent. In his mind, he had already survived. Now it was up to him to take advantage of it and begin living.

“Will you be needing anything more from me before I head off for the morning, Mr. Clarkson?” Demarcus, the concierge assigned to him during his stay, asked after he tied the small boat to the dock.

“No. Thank you. I think I’m going to go take a mid-morning nap. I’ll see you around lunch time.”

“Very well, sir. Rest beautifully,” he said before turning and walking down the long path of the dock to the main building of the property.

Anthony looked up at the sun and closed his eyes. Normally he hated such high temperatures, especially when it was mixed with high humidity. There was something about the beauty and peacefulness of this place that made it enjoyable. Each time he felt the sun beating down on his skin, he felt like the rays were actually kissing and blessing him. It felt good to know that after feeling like death for so many months he was finally starting to feel human again.

He walked up to the door of his small hut and opened it. At first he didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Then once he stepped inside and closed the door behind him he felt the hairs stand up on the back of his neck and an eerie feeling that he wasn’t alone took hold of him.

Years of working for the bureau had given him this sixth sense, but it usually came before he was about to be in a dangerous situation. That wasn’t what he was feeling this time. Excitement was working through his nerves as he heard movement in the bedroom.
